Summer Returns, But Just For A Brief Visit

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Like the weather? Just wait a minute. Or a day or two. People around Scarsdale took advantage of Monday’s summer-like sunshine to get outside and enjoy the warmth. It helped that the 80-degree temps came in concert with Columbus Day, a day off for school kids and many adults.

A group of friends spent some time in the early afternoon at the pond behind Scarsdale Library. Duane Shively of Toledo, Ohio, was in town visiting Koh Nakamura and Kengo Kato of Scarsdale and Silvia Morrrill of Bedford Hills before heading off to Japan Tuesday.

“Enjoy it while it lasts,” Shively said.

And that’s exactly what the four were doing, watching the ducks and turtles in the pond after visiting a shrine to Kato’s mother, Hiroko Kato, who died in 1994 at the age of 47. Kengo Kato’s father donated the shrine with a plaque in her memory, the Kengo had come to place some flowers and incense there.

Over at the Parkway Café on East Parkway, waitress Ashley Cucolo was busy tending to diners in the outdoor sitting area. She said the outdoor tables had been very busy, and she was happy to be able to spend so much time outdoors.

Across the street at Starbucks,  artists Jane Morgan of White Plains and Marian Norman of Eastchester were sitting at the outdoor pation overlooking the Metro Rail platform. “I’m loving it,” Norman said. It’s pretty incredible. It’s like we have a little piece of summer back.”

Morgan had a slightly different take on the day. “Sunshine equals hope,” she said, adding, “Halloween’s coming, and we’re about to be plunged into darkness.”

The darkness will actually be here a lot sooner than Oct. 31. The National Weather Service is predicting a 75-degree high for Tuesday, but gathering clouds will darken the sky by later afternoon. On Wednesday, expect heavy rain and wind, according to the NWS, followed by a return to more seasonable temperatures.
