At least three people with ties to New York are among the 49 victims of the largest mass shooting in U.S. history, which occurred early Sunday morning at at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
At least one other New York was seriously wounded.
Enrique Rios, a 25-year-old social worker from the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, visited Orlando to celebrate a friend's birthday.
"We lost a good young man from Brooklyn," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Rios during a vigil at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan Monday night. "A caring and loving young man, he was already serving others.
"He was attending nursing school while working with our senior citizens as a social worker. This is the kind of good human being we lost in Orlando, someone with a life ahead, making this world a better place," said de Blasio.
"Sadly, his dreams were cut short by this senseless act of violence," said Richard Relkin, a spokesman for St. Francis College in Brooklyn, Rios' alma mater, in a press release. "he St. Francis College community mourns the loss of one of our own and offers prayers to his family and friends."
Brooklyn born Brenda McCool, 49, also was killed in the shooting.
A single mother of 11, McCool reportedly went to Pulse with one of her sons, Isaiah Henderson, a 21-year-old who is gay, according to NBC News. Henderson survived the attack.
Mercedez Flores, 26, who grew up in the Ozone Park section Queens, was also a victim.
Flores went to Pulse almost every weekend, along with her best friend, Amanda Alvear, who also died in the shooting, according to ABC News.
Flores, who moved to Florida when she was a child, studied at Valencia Community College in Orlando and wanted to become a party planner, according to ABC News.
Marissa Delgado, 29, of Glen Cove on Long Island was shot as many as a dozen times, and remains hospitalized, according to the New York Post.
