Prescriptions Must Be Submitted Electronically Under New NY Law

Searching around for that little prescription sheet -- or hoping the pharmacist can read it -- will soon be a thing of the past.

New York State is poised to become the first state to demand doctors issue prescriptions electronically by punishing those who don't.

Starting Sunday, March 27, all prescriptions are to be sent electronically to the pharmacy, the New York Times reports.

New York already leads the nation in the number of health care providers using electronic prescriptions. The effort is part of a further push to prevent fraud, particularly in cases of opioid drug overuse and abuse, the New York Times says.

Not all doctors and patients are happy with the change, the New York Times reports, noting it can be more time consuming for doctors to change prescriptions. And it eliminates a patient's ability to shop around for the best drug prices.

But, doctors say many patients are happy to have the prescription sent to be filled before they even leave the office, the New York Times says.
