The U.S. Capitol was in lockdown for more than an hour Monday after reports of a shooting inside the visitor's center.

The male suspect is in custody and has been hospitalized, according to CNN, which reported the suspect was shot by U.S. Capitol Police. A female bystander was injured by shrapnel, the report said.

It was an isolated incident not believed to be related to terrorism and Capitol Police are reportedly familiar with the male suspect who has a history of mental issues, according to MSNBC.

"There has been an isolated incident at the US Capitol. There is no active threat to the public," the DC Police Department said in a statement at 3:19 p.m.

Congressmen and senators are in the midst of spring recess (two weeks for Congress, one week for the Senate) though some staffers were working inside the Capitol at the time of the incident, shortly before 3 p.m.

Those staffers were initially told to move to assigned shelter areas, before the shelter in place order was lifted just before 4 p.m., according to CNN.

Spring recess is a busy time for tourist visits to the Capitol.
