One of the three wounded officers is in critical condition and the other two are in stable condition with injuries classified as non-life threatening, according to authorities.
The suspect in the ambush, Gavin Eugene Long, described as a 29-year-old black male from Kansas City, Mo., is dead and authorities are now saying they believe there was only one gunman. Long was wearing all black at the time of the shootings, said authorities. Long left the U.S. Marines in 2010 with an honorable discharge, according to CBS News. CBS News is also reporting Long was born on July 17, 1987, meaning the ambush occurred on his 29th birthday.
The incident, which occurred close to the Baton Rouge Police Headquarters, happened at around 10 a.m. Eastern time near Old Hammond Highway and Airline Highway.
Police in Baton Route shot and killed Alton Sterling, a black man pinned to the ground near a convenience store after receiving a call about an armed man threatening another man on July 5.
Two days later, a gunman who was later killed ambushed and shot and killed five police officers and injured nine others at the end of a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas.
