In a related development, the FBI issued an alert of its own, warning law enforcement agencies in Louisiana of planned riots and possible violence against officers after the fatal shooting of a black man earlier this week by police in Baton Rouge.
While the United States regularly issues travel advisories for Americans visiting other nations, it is extremely rare for countries to issue advisories for their citizens regarding traveling to the US.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration has taken a note of the recent tensions in some American cities over shootings of young black males by police officers," says the Bahamas advisory. "We wish to advise all Bahamians traveling to the US but especially to the affected cities to exercise appropriate caution generally."
The statement went on to say, "In particular young males are asked to exercise extreme caution in affected cities in their interactions with the police. Do not be confrontational and cooperate.
"Do not get involved in political or other demonstrations under any circumstances and avoid crowds."
A former British colony that relies heavily on tourism to support its economy, the Bahamas celebrates the 43rd anniversary of its Independence Day on Sunday.
With a population of approximately 316,000, the Bahamas is located 50 miles southeast of the coast of Florida.
