The two fatalities occurred near the backhoe, according to CNN.
Amtrak has suspended Northeast corridor service after the train hit a backhoe that was on the tracks near Chester, Pennsylvania just before 8 a.m., Amtrak said. The train was bound for Savannah, Georgia.
About 341 passengers and seven crew members were aboard the train, according to CNN.
