Scarsdale Children Raise Money For African Water Relief

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- The children of Greenville Community Church in Scarsdale, N.Y., are using their heads and fundraising efforts to support water relief efforts in Africa -- specifically, the practice of carrying water on one’s head.

Sunday school students from Greeville Community Church in Scarsdale, N.Y., have raised enough money to purchase six Hippo Water Rollers for the Maasai people of Kenya.

Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Rd. in Scarsdale, has teamed up with the Hippo Water Roller Project in Africa to help alleviate the suffering of Kenya’s Maasai people caused by traditional methods of carrying water on the head.

Each day, the Maasai people spend hours carrying five-gallon water containers, traditionally balanced on their heads. The Hippo Water Roller allows them to transport nearly five times as much water (24 gallons) in a single trip, simply by rolling it on the ground.

The Greenville Community Church children were tasked to raise $135 via their Sunday school classes. In just five weeks, they’d raised $810 or enough money to provide six Hippo Water Rollers.

“The children in our church rose to the challenge, and demonstrated that they sympathize with the Maasai people who must carry all the water required for their daily needs,” said Church Minister Rev. Edward Schreur in a statement. “I’m glad that we can help in such a practical way.”
