Parachute Team Jumps Into Scarsdale Charity Event

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Things will be jumping in July when the Scarsdale Fire Department and firefighters union Local 1394 bring children from the Ronald McDonald House to the village for A Day in the Country.

The Black Knights military parachute stunt team will make an appearance, dropping in – literally – at about 10:45 a.m. Organizer John Savarese, a Scarsdale firefighter who is also a professional magician, calls the event "a small air show" planned for Crossway Field, 56 Crossway.

The jumpers will be a highlight for the critically ill children and their families at the event planned for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 19 at Fire Station No. 3 on Crossway and the nearby village swimming pool on Mamaroneck Road. Children from the Ronald McDonald Houses in Manhattan and Westchester County have been invited. Children from some New York City hospitals may take part as well, Savarese said.

The day will include carnival rides and games, food donated by local restaurants, fire trucks and swimming. The Garden of Dreams foundation from Madison Square Garden has been invited to participate, and Savarese is waiting for the military to let him know whether they will bring some equipment for the children to experience.

Savarese has been selling gift discount cards to raise money. The cards, with offers from 11 merchants, cost $30. They are good through November, and there is no limit on their use. See Local 1394 website for more information and a list of participating merchants.
