Ex-Scarsdale Residents Reflect on Westchester Wedding

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Richard and Barbara Block can recount even the smallest detail of their wedding day: the white gown, the first dance together and the friends and family who attended, to name a few.

For this Westchester couple, that September celebration dates back more than four decades ago when at a nearby spot then referred to as The Hilton Tarrytown, they became man and wife.  Today that reception hall is located at The Doubletree by Hilton Tarrytown.

“[The details] become so much more important as you look back,” said Richard Block.

A few tidbits the former Scarsdale residents fondly reminisces about include the beauty of the location’s outdoor garden (which has been preserved through the years,) tunes by Barbara’s uncle’s wedding band and the attendance of both of their grandparents. Now 42 years later, the Tarrytown couple’s daughter Nancy is about to follow her parents’ suit by getting married there in just matter of weeks.

“We looked around at other places to have [our daughter’s wedding] but we always had the Doubletree in the back of our minds,” said Barbara Block.

A visit to their Tarrytown home provided tidbits of their wedding at what’s now a widely recognized location were not the faded pages of a scrapbook put away for years. In fact, the battered photographs spread over their coffee table captured the moment in time not only for their love’s history, but also for the Westchester landmark which was at the time, the first major hotel in the county.

It’s inevitable that the Blocks will walk into the Doubletree for their daughter’s momentous occasion as those realities come to life.

“It’s wonderful to have the opportunity for it to come full circle,” added Barbara Block.

Have a story about the Doubletree by Hilton Tarrytown like this? The Blocks aren't the only one with something to celebrate--The DoubleTree will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate that milestone, the hotel will be hosting a "50 Golden Years of Weddings Reception" this September, as part of a series of special occasions themed after 1961; the year the hotel opened its doors.

The 50 Golden Years of Weddings Reception will be held on Friday evening, September 16 for any couple married here over the past five decades. For more information, please contact Michelle Citino at Michelle.citino@hilton.com.
