Officials announced recently that they received the first-time grant from People's United Community Foundation to support the agency's early literacy family book bag program, which provides child care centers and family child care providers with bags of books to lend to children for family reading.

The Westchester council was recognized, along with 17 other local grant recipients, at a recent breakfast event hosted by the foundation.

“Our Book Bag Program plays a critical role in early literacy for Westchester’s children – giving them the opportunity to develop and share a love of reading and storytelling with their parents and siblings outside of school,” said Kathy Halas, council executive director.

The council has distributed about 2,000 books to child care programs and providers since the program began in 2012. Child care programs that work with the Westchester council also receive training and technical assistance from specialists to build and enrich the early literacy in children in their care.

The Child Care Council of Westchester is a private, nonprofit resource organization. The group provides parent referrals, training, information, technical assistance, reports on the industry, and more. Visit their website for more details.
