The Nature Center began its 40th anniversary celebration – “Keeping Westchester Wild” – during the winter when officials reached out to the community with an online study to determine what improvements patrons would like to see at the popular weekend destination.
According to the results of the survey, 93 percent of respondents would recommend the Greenburgh Nature Center to visitors in the area, while 63 percent determined that education was the location’s main focus and 78 percent reported that they’ve been coming to the Nature Center for several years, “treasuring its easily accessible location and ability to enjoy an intimate connection with open green space, animals and plant life.”
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, volunteers and officials with the Greenburgh Nature Center have slated a number of projects to “Keep Westchester Wild” and improve the grounds.
Plans include redeveloping select paths and trail ways to increase accessibility and improve the experience for visitors, the construction of an additional barn for animals and classroom space and the launching of a “three-year campaign to restore the historic Manor House and indoor animal exhibits in advance of the building’s 100-year anniversary in 2018.”
Margaret Tjimos, the executive director of the Greenburgh Nature Center, said that these projects are just the beginning of improvements planned for her location, as they continue to seek improving the user experience.
“The Greenburgh Nature Center is an extremely special place,” she said. “While for generations, we have been known as a beloved destination for children and families to enjoy animals and the outdoors, increasingly the breadth and depth of our facilities and programs are now being recognized as instrumental in training future leaders of all ages, ensuring a lasting, intimate connection with our natural world, and shaping community environmental consciousness and behavior.”
“I’m thrilled by what we’ve accomplished to date, and the prospects in front of us. “
