Teen Car Crashes Increase Along With Driving Distractions

Texting, talking on the phone, or talking to friends in the car have led to an increase in teen car crashes over the past five years, according to AAA Horizons.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers over the past five years during the 100 Deadliest Days, which begins on Memorial Day each year, said AAA Horizons.

A recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study found almost 60 percent of teen crashes involve distractions, and the number of teens texting and using social media while behind the wheel are on the rise, added AAA Horizons.

The study showed that during the 100 Deadliest Days:

  •  Some 1,022 people died each year in crashes with teens behind the wheel.
  • The number of deaths increased by 16 percent each day. 

In addition, the study showed the top three reasons for teen accidents included:

  • Talking to passengers in the vehicle: 15 percent.
  •  Talking, texting or using a cellphone: 12 percent.
  •  Looking at something inside the vehicle: 11 percent.
