Mad Science will perform at the kick-off at 11 a.m. called, "Ready, Set Science," a physics program that explores the science behind sports.
The Summer Reading Game encourages children from infants through fifth-grade to read or be read to during the summer months.
Awards are given based on the number of books read or listened to. After two books, the participating children receive a sticker, after five books, they can dig into the “Treasure Chest” for a fun prize and after 20 books they receive a book.
As an incentive to come to the library, children will receive a raffle ticket each time they visit. Four raffle tickets will be pulled each week with winners receiving a gift card to Haagen Dazs of Scarsdale, donated by owner Steve Mandani, or a book
This year the program will use a new online system, Wandoo Reader, that is easier to use and allows for more fun activities.
“When the children come to the library, we like to have them discuss the books they have read with a librarian or have someone read a book to them,” says Karen Zielinski, head of Youth Services. “The program has also become a family event with older children reading to their younger siblings.”
In 2015, 294 children took part in the program reading an average of 23 and half books per child.
Online registration begins on Thursday, June 23. To register, visit scarsdalelibrary.org, and click on the Summer Reading Program link.
