Scarsdale Launches New Residential Food Scrap Recycling Program for 2017

SCARSDALE, N.Y. --  Scarsdale kicked off a new residential food scrap recycling program on Monday.

This  innovative program is the first of its kind offered by a Westchester County municipality, according to a release from the Village of Scarsdale's Public Works Department.

Residents are encouraged to bring their food scraps to the drop-off site located at the Scarsdale Recycling Center, 110 Secor Road, where the scraps will be accepted at no charge.

To help residents get started, at-home food scrap collection “Starter Kits” are available for $20 at the Scarsdale Recycling Center Office, 110 Secor Road -- checks only, no cash.

Unlike backyard food composting, all food scraps, including but not limited to meat, dairy, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, pasta, cooked food, leftover food, etc., will be accepted.

The collected food scraps will be recycled into compost at a commercial facility, thereby helping to conscientiously incorporate nutrient-rich food waste back into the food chain rather than treat it as garbage, the release said.
