Joseph Marsek, the former chief of the Ardsley Fire Department, died on Monday, Nov. 4 at the age of 81, according to his obituary.
According to the department, Marsek was a Life Member who served for 60 years.
"Joe was a mentor to all of us and loved by so many. He will be sorely missed," the department wrote in a social media post on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Born in 1943, Marsek was a lifelong Ardsley resident who graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan and attended Iona University in Bronxville before going on to serve in the US Army from 1966 to 1968.
When he returned home, he joined the fire department and served as Chief from 1976 to 1978.
"His commitment to serving his community remained a guiding force throughout his life," Marsek's obituary read.
Marsek married his wife, Jane Slack, in 1975 and had four children with her: Andrew, James, Stephen, and Elizabeth. In addition to his service with the fire department, he also worked for his family business, Chelsea Wire Works, and also worked for Ferncliff Cemetery until his retirement.
Marsek is survived by his wife, Jane; his children; his grandchildren, Joey, Gabby, Sophie, and Milo; and his brother, John.
A visitation service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry at 64 Ashford Ave.
A Mass will then be held on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ardsley at 535 Ashford Ave.
