The Valhalla Union Free School District was forced to operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, Feb. 29 as a result of downed trees and power lines that blocked several bus routes in the hamlet, officials announced.
The damage was caused by a powerful overnight storm on Wednesday night, Feb. 28 into Thursday that brought gusts as high as 59 miles per hour to Westchester.
In addition to the blocked bus routes, the damage caused by the storm also resulted in the closure of Grasslands Road and Columbus Avenue, district officials said.
Utility companies are currently working to clear the obstacles but many routes remained inaccessible as of around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to the district. Any affected streets and houses that cannot be reached by buses should reach out to their school building's principal or attendance secretary.
"We urge everyone to prioritize safety and to be cautious while traveling this morning. See you soon," the district said on social media.
