Scarsdale, Get Ready For The Zombie Asylum

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Supply Field is being taken over by the undead this weekend, as the storage facility will become home to a haunted hoard of zombies eager to put a scare into those brave enough to enter.

For the second straight year, The Center@862 (formerly the Scarsdale Teen Center) is welcoming fearless residents to the haunted house put together by Joe Delfino and the Fright Room Production team.

This year’s Zombie Asylum will be more reliant on live actors than props and sounds. The cast has tripled, from about eight a year ago to upwards of 25 this time around.

“It’s very different this year,” Delfino said. “Last year was more traditional, with lots of different rooms. This year, we have an overarching theme. The whole thing is an asylum, and everyone is zombies. It’s a bigger, more elaborate production. We’ve got some intense scares.”

Delfino and his crew will be spooking visitors of all ages at the haunt from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 28 and 30, and 6 p.m.-10 p.m. on Halloween night. Only two to four people will be allowed to enter the Zombie Asylum at a time, both as a safety precaution and so none of the surprises are spoiled for trailing groups.

“It’s going to be very controlled. We’re protective of our scares; it’s all carefully mapped out,” Delfino said. “Everything is set to motion detectors, and we need to give our actors a chance to reset and catch their breath.”

The Fright Room Production team spent nearly an entire year getting the Zombie Asylum ready. During the off-season, crew members built the props and sets, and they’ve been busy setting up since Sept. 20.

Ellen Tiven-Moore, executive director of The Center@862, said that being able to have the haunted house at Supply Field is invaluable for the Teen Center after having to close down during the summer for renovations.

“We liked having it [at the Teen Center] last year, but we had to close it down for a full month because it’s such an elaborate haunt,” she said. “Another problem is that the Teen Center is down in a basement, so it’s harder for people to find it.”

Although last year’s October snowstorm forced organizers to cancel two of the five days of the first haunt, more than 400 people still attended. This year, Tiven-Moore and Delfino expect an even more impressive turnout.

“We’ve already pre-sold several hundred tickets right off the bat,” Tiven-Moore said. “We don’t make a ton of money on this event because it costs so much, but it’s one of our favorites.”

Tickets are $10. Supply Field is at 244 Heathcote Road in Scarsdale.
