A polio case identified in New York may be the "tip of the iceberg," the state's health commissioner is now saying. Dr. Mary T. Bassett issued the warning after officials said wastewater samples had detected the virus in Orange County shortly after officials confirmed a case in neighboring Rockland County in late July, the first time the disease has been seen in the United States in nearly a decade. As the Omicron COVID-19 variant rages, a mayor in the Hudson Valley has declared a state of emergency in response to the latest outbreak. In Orange County, Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano announced that effective as of Wednesday, Jan. 5, the city will be under the State of Emergency, which will be in effect through at least Friday, Feb. 4. 19: New Positive Case Reported At High School In Hudson Valley
A new positive case of COVID-19 has been reported at a high school in the Hudson Valley. The Monroe-Woodbury School District said that a Monroe-Woodbury High School student tested positive. As a result, the high school has switched to remote learning from Wednesday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 16. Another student in the Hudson Valley has tested positive for COVID-19, though it is unclear whether any buildings will have to be temporarily closed. The Warwick Valley Central School District issued a letter to parents over the weekend alerting them that a student at Park Avenue Elementary tested positive for the virus on Friday, Oct. 9.
