Rye's Legal Eagles Win Softball Championship

RYE, N.Y. – After a slow and shaky start to this softball season, the Rye-based Legal Eagles were crowned champions of the Rye Recreation Department’s Sound Shore Women’s Softball League after beating Frank’s Pizza in the playoff finals.

“The turnaround in our season was outstanding,” said player-manager Kelsey Hanley. “We really peaked just in time for playoffs.”

The Eagles ended the regular season with a record of 6-7. The team beat both 97 Lake and Rye Brook in the playoffs to face Frank’s Pizza in the first game of the finals on Aug. 9. The Eagles got an early advantage thanks to Desiree Mion, Rosemarie Hanley and Elise Byrnes. After five innings the Eagles were ahead 18-3, prompting the umpires to call the game.

On Tuesday, the Eagles didn’t score until the second inning, but the team rallied from there. Hanley hit a bases-clearing triple to set the score at 7-1. Frank’s Pizza made a late comeback attempt in the seventh inning, but in the end the Eagles clinched the title of Women’s Softball Champs for the 2012 season at a final score of 7-3.

The Legal Eagles, sponsored by Grossman & Associates of Rye, also featured players Maura Kelly, Betty Jane Gianfrancesco, Melissa Cohen, Lindsey Hanley, Caroline Feeley, Emma and Janet Herbold, Bridget Vavasour, Sue Payne, Aisling Geraghty, Laurie Singer and Glennie Westerink.

George Grossman of Grossman & Associates said, “They really came together to prove themselves this year. It was tough losing in the championship game last year, but this year they did exactly what they needed to, and I think it shows the dedication of these ladies.”
