Rye Junior Places 10th In Fencing World Championships

RYE, N.Y. -- Rye High School junior Jonah Shainberg was the top U.S. performer in the men's saber event at the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Croatia. He finished 10th overall.

Shainberg is a member of the United States National Fencing Team, and is the number one ranked cadet saber fencer and the fifth-ranked junior saber fencer in the country. He has competed all over the country for North American Cup competitions, and all over the world as part of a World Cup Team. He recently placed fifth in the U.S. Fencing Junior Olympics.

The Junior and Cadet World Championships are hosted by the International Fencing Federation. The competition features between 1,200 and 1,300 juniors and cadets from more than 80 countries. Following the World Championships, Shainberg will compete in a North American Cup Division 1 competition, and this summer will fence in Israel in the Maccabiah Games.
