The school is assigning book to all students in an effort to create more discussions and motivate more students to read.

The story is a fictional account of a Japanese-American family's experiences during World War II. When reading, students will be asked to ponder the following questions: What actions must we take, individually and collectively, to create communities of respect and civility, justice and empathy? Why does what we do matter?

Students will take part in activities related to the text during the first two weeks of the school year. This will provide teachers with an early assessment of student reading and writing skills. This assessment will constitute ten percent of first quarter grades.
