RYE BROOK, N,Y. - Voters in the Blind Brook-Rye Union Free School district passed the Board of Education's adopted 2012-13 budget on Tuesday by an overwhelming 82 percent. The tally was 945 in favor and 198 against, according to unofficial results.
The budget of $39,960,322 includes a property-tax levy increase of 1.71 percent, which is under the state mandated 2 per cent cap.
In the Board of Education race, incumbent Nancy Barr received the most votes with 909 and the vice chair of the Citizen's Financial Advisory Committee Dan Savitt captured the second seat with 852 votes. Former Board of Education President Rick Buzin received 618 votes.
Retired Scarsdale teacher and Rye Brook resident Allen Strass said he voted for the budget because it is important to have a strong school district.
"The school district is excellent and it's important to make sure the teachers are paid the salaries they deserve," Strass said. "We need to provide opportunities for our students to succeed."
Rye Brook resident Jay Schwab said that voting for the budget is the right thing to do for the community.
"It's a very tight budget," Schwab said. "I don't enjoy raises, but you must pass the school budget to have a decent school."
