"I am especially delighted to welcome Caryl Phillips, whose powerful writings have inspired students in many of my classes,” said Louise Yelin, professor of literature at Purchase. “Phillips’ novels and essays, taken together, give us the history of the present moment through the eyes and in the voices of those whom T.S. Eliot identified as ‘the people without history.’”

Phillips authored 11 award-winning novels and is a prolific essayist, journalist, screenwriter and playwright. His latest novel, "The Lost Child," revisits the story of Heathcliff of "Wuthering Heights" and intertwines it with a modern narrative of the orphans and outcasts.

Phillips has received prizes and awards such as the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a British Council Fellowship, a Lannan Foundation Fellowship, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the 2006 PEN/Open Book Award.

The free event will take place in Purchase College's Neuberger Museum Study from 4:30-6 p.m.
