RYE, N.Y. -- Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin's decision not to seek reelection opened his seat up for a race between Republican Aldo Vitagliano and Conservative Democrat Gary Zuckerman.
With all of the vote totals in early Wednesday, Zuckerman was leading, according to unofficial returns from the Westchester County Board of Elections.
Zuckerman had about 55 percent of the vote total to Vitagliano's 45 percent, according to unofficial returns.
The town board oversees property tax assessments and services including parks in Rye Brook, Rye Neck, Manaroneck, Port Chester and the City of Rye.
Running for Rye Town Council on Tuesday were: Anthony Baxter, a Republican from Port Chester; Lindsay Jackson, a conservative Republican from Rye Neck who also got an endorsement from Democrats; and Alexander Leonzi, a Republican.
Two town board seats were open. According to unofficial returns, Jackson -- with 49 percent of the votes -- and Baxter -- with 29 percent of the votes -- were leading Leonzi, who had 22 percent of the 6,705 votes cast on Tuesday, according to unofficial returns.
Zuckerman has served as trustee to the Village of Rye Brook and planning board chairman. "We bring a new face to the politics of this area,'' Zuckerman said of his bipartisan ticket.
"Rye Brook is different from Port Chester is different from Rye Neck,'' Zuckerman said during a recent interview on Larchmont-Mamaroneck Community Television (LMC-TV.org) -- noting he has "the ability to listen."
Zuckerman is an attorney who specializes in real estate. "They're talking about property taxes, property taxes, property taxes,'' he said of residents he encountered during the fall campaign.
