RYE, N.Y. -- Deputy Mayor Peter Jovanovich has collected enough signatures to appear on the ballot as a candidate for mayor of Rye this November.

Jovanovich, a member of the City Council, is running for mayor as an independent against fellow City Council member, Republican Joe Sack. The Jovanovich for Mayor campaign had collected more than 500 signatures for his candidacy by Monday.

"In just ten days, over 30 volunteers have worked nights and weekends to reach this number," he said. "It's evident that the Rye voters want a choice this November."

An independent candidate requires 377 signatures on petitions in order to appear on the ballot. The deadline for submitting petitions to the Westchester Board of Elections is Aug. 20.
