Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said, “Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Belgium as yet another murderous rampage has been carried out by ISIS."
"It is yet again another reminder of the vigilance needed at home and abroad.," Astorino said. "We are under attack by radical Islamic terrorists and peaceful nations and peoples across the world need to unite to not only condemn these killings but to stop them as well,."
Astorino added: "At home we need to ensure that all our intelligence and law enforcement agencies are sharing information and working as one to keep people safe.”
Authorities are searching for suspects after two explosions at a Belgian airport and another at a busy metro station in the Belgian capital, wounding at least 230 others, according to the latest news accounts.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks.
U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, a Democrat who represents Westchester and Rockland counties, said: “The news out of Brussels is simply heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and with the emergency personnel responding to this brutal and cowardly attack."
“Early indications that this was a terrorist attack coming on the heels of Istanbul, Paris, and San Bernardino, are another reminder of the need to remain vigilant against violent extremism, and to aggressively root out and defeat those who would kill and maim innocent civilians simply going about their lives," Lowey said.
“I urge President Obama to provide any assistance necessary to Belgian and European authorities as they investigate this inhuman attack and bring to justice anyone else involved," Lowey said.
And U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-Cold Spring, said: “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families of the devastating terrorist attacks in Brussels."
"As New Yorkers and Americans we know first-hand that we are stronger when we stand together, and today we stand with the people of Belgium in demanding an end to these indiscriminate acts of terror and violence in Belgium and across the world. Now is not the time to succumb to fear or isolation - now is the time to work together to bring those responsible for these attacks to swift justice," Maloney said.
