Hospitalized were Rye residents Peter Thomas, 40, his 12-year-old daughter Anabelle Thomas and 12-year-old Reilly Traynor, also of Rye. Traynor was listed in critical condition.
Anabelle Thomas and Traynor were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The accident, which occurred about 1:20 p.m. on Monday on I-95 in Branford, Conn., tied up traffic on the major interstate highway for hours.
According to a Connecticut State Police news release, the accident, which occurred on southbound Interstate 95 between exits 54 and 53, was caused by a box truck which failed to come to a stop after cars in front of the truck began to slow down.
Hospital officials told the New Haven Register four adults and two children were being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The other injured adults were: Jesse Delucca, 37, a native of Oradell, N.J., now living in Oakland, N.J.; Emma Godi, 18, of Chester, Conn.; and James Ryan, 65, of Warwick, R.I.
Firefighters from Branford and East Haven fire departments responded to the accident and worked to free the victims from their vehicles.
The multiple-car pileup caused traffic to back up for nearly four miles Monday.
