RYE, N.Y.-- It was a summer that was fun, albeit went by too quickly. Westchester residents soaked up the final, unofficial day of summer Monday at Playland Beach, which closes on Labor Day.

People relaxed on the beach and got some swimming in before the rain came early in the afternoon.

Patri Ginas and Ann Barbara, both Port Chester residents, said they look forward to autumn and the closing of Rye Playland every year.

"You don't hear the noise from rides every year," Ginas said. "You need that sanctuary."

Ginas said while she enjoys Playland, she looks forward to no longer hearing fire whistles and fire engines.

"I'm glad it's closing," Ginas said. "People can bring their dogs onto the beach. All dogs can roam free until April."

Ginas and Barbara said they also get a break from the tourists with the calendar turning to autumn. But they will look back fondly on the last three months.

"We had an awesome summer," Barbara said.

Greg Francisco, a Philadelphia native, was walking his dogs, Stella and Bucca, near Playland Park, Francisco said he loves taking his dogs and walking at Rye Beach.

"It's so wonderful coming to Playland," Francisco said. "It's nice and relaxing."
