RYE BROOK, N.Y. The Village of Rye Brook Board of Trustees passed Tuesday a resolution by a vote of 4-0, Trustee David Heiser was absent, extending the building amnesty program for one more year. The program was slated to expire on May 24.
"What this is, it provides an amnesty for penalties and fines for work completed without a permit, Village Manager Chris Bradbury said. "We think its been very successful, the number one issue is about safety and making sure things are built to code."
The program also provides an exception for homeowners looking to approve small projects that allow applicants to bypass the Architectural Review Board. In order to qualify for the small projects exception, the work must have been completed before Nov. 1, 2007.
Bradbury said the request to extend the building amnesty program through 2013 came from the Arbors, a townhouse community located in the village. Bradbury added that 12 of the 64 applications to the amnesty program have come from the Arbors.
Rye Brook Mayor Joan Feinstein said that although she's always been a proponent of the program, eventually it has to come to an end.
"If you want to legalize your work, this is the year to do it," Feinstien said.
Bradbury estimates the lost revenue from the 64 applicants to be around $70,000. For more information regarding the local law or the building amnesty program, visit the Village of Rye Brook website at ryebrook.org.
