Rye Arts Center to Honor Board Member at Gala

RYE, N.Y. – The Rye Arts Center (RAC) will honor long-time board trustee and former gallery committee chair Barbara Elliot at the Center's Annual Gala this Saturday. Elliot, who moved to Rye over 35 years ago, said her involvement with the RAC was born out of happenstance.

"I knew about the Rye Arts Center and I knew some of the trustees," Elliot said. "Somebody approached me and I joined the gallery committee and then I joined the board."

Elliot's extensive background in both arts and education made her an attractive candidate to serve on the board. A graduate of Bankstreet College's museum education graduate program, Elliot previously served on the board of the Rye Historical Society before coming over to the RAC.

Although Elliot said she was honored to be recognized for her more than 20 years of service to the Rye Arts Center, she was quick to deflect credit to the center's many teachers and volunteers who will also be honored at the event.

"It is wonderful because I love the arts," Elliot said. "There are so many talented people involved. There's such a great staff here and the instructors are a great asset, so I don't think about it just as for me, I think about it like we are supporting the Rye Arts Center."

According to Elliot, the Rye Arts Center would not be possible if it weren't for the tremendous support of area volunteers.

"One unique thing about the Rye Arts Center is that it's volunteer driven, which is also nice about a volunteer is that people can pursue certain interests, which is really unique," she said.
