The town and its environmental committee, the Sustainability Collaborative, will provide the barrels at discounted prices on Sunday April 10.
The rain barrels can be reserved directly by clicking here on the program’s website and paid for and picked up at “Grow it Green”, a tri-municipal event from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Larchmont Temple.
The barrels are valued at $149 apiece, according to town officials, but will be sold to town residents for $50 apiece. Non-residents can buy them for $65 apiece.
“The Town of Mamaroneck is committed to protecting our water quality and managing the damaging effects of storm water runoff,” Mamaroneck Town Supervisor, Nancy Seligson said in a press statement. “The use of rain barrels will help residents conserve water and prevent water pollution in Long Island Sound."
Rain diversion downspouts, which can be hooked up to gutters, are being sold for $7 to residents and $11 apiece for non-residents.
The rain barrels, made from recycled plastic, capture rainwater from roof-tops by connecting to the home’s downspout. This water would typically go down the storm drain carrying potential contaminants and contributing to flash flooding, town officials said.
The cumulative effect of rain barrels implemented throughout a geographic area can have a significant impact on storm water management and water quality.
Water collected by the rain barrels can be used for gardens and lawns, and can also be used to wash cars and pets.
Rain barrels will continue to be sold while supplies last each Saturday starting April 16. They can be paid for (by check only) and picked up at the Town’s Recycling Center at 40 Maxwell Ave. from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Seligson said town officials "are thrilled that our environmental committee, the Sustainability Collaborative worked with the administration to get this initiative going.”
