According to Post sources, NBC News chairman Andy Lack is in Russia trying to negotiate an interview with the Russian strongman.
If Lack manages to do the unimaginable and land the interview, will the scoop go to Kelly, or will heavyweights Matt Lauer or Lester Holt get the gold crown of interviews, wondered Page Six.
NBC insiders say no one knows for sure at this point. The Page Six source added that the if the interview is landed, it's not Kelly's yet.
Given the current state of affairs between the two countries over Syria, and the FBI investigation into Russian involvement in last year's election, a Putin interview would be watched by an international audience, said Page Six.
Kelly joined NBC News in January where she will host a daytime news program, anchor her own, as-of-yet untitled Sunday night program, will assist with breaking news and participate in select political programming.
Kelly, of Rye, who was finally released from her contract with Fox last week, spent 12 years with the broadcast news behemoth. Most recently, she had been anchoring her own primetime television show, “The Kelly File.”
