Cai Palmer, owner of Rye's Wine at Five which prides itself on its affordable and eclectic vino varieties, offers the following suggestions.

  • A Los Viñateros Bravos Cinsault 2014: Made in Chile from French grapes, this medium to light red wine is a complex and pleasant alternative to pinot noir.
  • Botanica Pinot Noir 2013: This delicious, warm-weather pinot noir is made in South Africa. Slightly chilled, it brings out all of the flavors of soft cherry baking spice. "For summer, you can sit outside, have a chilled bottle of red wine and feel satisfied," explained Palmer.
  • Quarticello Despina Malvasia 2012: This rustic sparkling red wine shows aromatics of orange blossom, yeast, and lemon that are mirrored on the palate. Unfiltered and fermented in its natural yeast, the wine has a cloudy look to it. "Sparkling wine is about the most friendly type of wine ever," added Wine at Five Employee Bruno Peixoto.
  • Tendu Vermentino 2014: This fragrant vermentino, made in California from an Italian grape, is similar to Sauvignon Blanc. In other words, it's crisp and cool on the palate.
