Snow Has Hastings Surprised, but Prepared

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – With a potential snow storm rolling in on Saturday, Halloween weekend may have quite a different feel to it than usual.

“We’ve had phone calls definitely from people asking for rock salt, shovels and other things,” said Lorie Labianco, a manager at Reader’s Hardware in Dobbs Ferry.

A Winter Storm Watch has been posted for Westchester County from Saturday morning until late that night.  Forecasts predict a potential for light, wet snow and rain to start early Saturday before transitioning to all snow in the afternoon. Although it’s still October, forecasts have said as much as four to eight inches of snow could fall on Saturday. With the expectation of snow, many have begun to stock up on winter supplies early. With temperatures expected to drop into freezing temperatures, Labianco recommended rock salt and calcium to help thaw frozen sidewalks and driveways.

“Calcium is a little more expensive and it melts at a lower temperature, whereas rock salt might just melt it and then refreeze,” she said.

Some still refuse to believe that snowflakes are coming this early in the year.

“I mean it’s not even Halloween,” said Dorothy Dunne. “Get going before it’s too late I guess. I still can’t believe it.”

Whether the accumulation of snow lives up to expectations remains to be seen, but Labianco said locals should be careful while it’s coming down.

“If you can’t drive in it, stay home people,” she said.
