Eliminating 'Cycle Of Debt': New NY Law Prohibits Fees On Outstanding Student Loans
Some financial relief has arrived for those with student loan debt from New York colleges. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a new law Thursday, Oct. 13, that prohibits state agencies from charging students an additional fee when collecting outstanding student debt. Under a previous state law, borrowers were charged up to 22 percent in fees on top of the amounts they owed, the governor’s office said. NY State Agencies Prepare For Thunderstorms, Possibility Of Flooding
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has cautioned residents as thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain to parts of the state, including areas that experienced flooding recently. Hochul said the storms are expected to mainly impact the Hudson Valley, New York City, parts of western Long Island, and the Capital Region from the late afternoon through the evening hours of Wednesday, Sept 8. Gov. Cuomo Unveils State Budget
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled his $168 billion 2018-2019 budget to lawmakers on Tuesday. Cuomo's budget includes a three-percent increase in funding for schools and a one-percent increase in funding for higher education. The budget also increases funding for capital projects by 14 percent and health care by three-percent. The budget also reduces spending on transportation, community colleges, mental hygiene and state agencies. State aid to municipalities and counties will be frozen.
