A man was apprehended after starting a blaze on an island in a Hudson Valley lake and not putting it out despite numerous orders from authorities, police said. The arrest resulted from an incident in Putnam County on Friday, Nov. 1 at around 6 p.m., when residents reported an open burn on Teakettle Spout Lake in Mahopac, according to the town's police department. Arriving officers found a man identified as Steven Turnbull "engaged in unauthorized outdoor burning" on a small island in the center of the lake, according to police. Firefighters were dispatched to a Northern Westchester residence after a lithium-ion battery sparked a blaze at the home. The incident happened on Wednesday, Jan. 24 around 2:50 p.m., when a fire began at a residence in Somers in the Amawalk area, according to the Somers Volunteer Fire Department. A Hudson Valley community is mourning the loss of a former fire chief who spent nearly his entire life serving the public. The Mahopac Fire Department in Putnam County announced the death of its former chief, Edward J. Scott, on Sunday, Oct. 8. In addition to serving as the former chief, Scott had also served as the past President and Chairman of the Mahopac Board of Fire Commissioners. He also worked as a 911 dispatcher for Putnam County. Car Crash Injures Person, Forces Trunk Door Open In Hudson Valley
One person was injured after crashing their car in the Hudson Valley. The one-car crash happened on Monday, Feb. 20 around 10:40 a.m., when firefighters in Carmel responded to Westshore Drive (Route 38) in the area of Farview Road. After arriving at the scene of the crash, officials closed the road for around 20 minutes until the damaged vehicle, which had its trunk door popped open, was able to be towed away. The occupant of the vehicle suffered minor injuries, according to the Mahopac Fire Department.

A lightning strike on Lake Mahopac sent three people out boating to the hospital and slightly injured another. The incident took place around 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 4 when Putnam County Sheriff's Sgt. Matthew Monroe of the department's Marine Patrol Unit responded to a report of an occupied disabled boat on Lake Mahopac, the department said.
