19: Iona College Cancels Classes Amid New Rochelle Coronavirus Outbreak
Iona College students are getting an extended Spring Break. With New Rochelle being ground zero for the spread of coronavirus in Westchester, Iona College announced it is canceling classes as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19. “Out of an abundance of caution, Iona College will start Spring Break four days early, canceling all in-person and online undergraduate and graduate Arts and Science classes effective 10 p.m. on Monday, March 9,” officials announced, noting that, ”there remain no known or suspected cases of coronavirus at Iona College at this time. 19: Columbia, Hofstra Cancel Classes
As the number of novel coronavirus cases has climbed to more than 100 in New York, two universities in the metropolitan area have suspended classes. Hofstra University said it has cancelled in-person classes for the week. Columbia University has suspended in-person classes for Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10 because a member of the Columbia community has been quarantined after COVID-19 exposure. John P. Witzel of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 1. John was born in Manhattan on Dec. 6, 1928 and later moved to Harrison. He attended Harrison High School, graduating in the class of 1945, and continued on to Columbia University where he graduated in 1949. John served overseas during the Korean War and, upon return home, he worked for the Bendix Corporation and later in the family business, Witzel Brothers Inc. Fran MacEachron, Hastings' First Female Mayor, Dies At Home In Sleepy Hollow
The woman who served as Hastings-on-Hudson's first female mayor has died. Frances DePuydt MacEachron, mayor of Hastings-on-Hudson from 1980 to 1992, died on Thursday, Aug. 8 at her home in Sleepy Hollow. She was 94. From 1968 to 1976, she was a member of the Hastings Board of Education, and for two years its president. She had also been active in the Hastings PTA, the Lyndhurst Board, and the Westchester Community College Foundation Board. Five students in Westchester and Rockland counties have earned SUEZ-NAWC scholarships worth $3,000. Former Westchester Community College President Joseph N. Hankin, who was one of the nation’s longest-serving community college presidents has died at the age of 78. The college announced Thursday, Jan. 17 that Hankin died on Wednesday, Jan. 16. He first took over at the college in 1971 and served 42 years at the helm until his retirement in 2013.
