Merry Christmas: NY Lawmakers To Become Highest Paid In US After Approving Raise
New York State lawmakers have voted to give themselves a significant pay raise days before Christmas, a move that would make them the highest paid in the country.
Meeting for a special session in Albany on Thursday, Dec. 22, the legislature approved a bill that raises member pay by $32,000, bringing their total annual compensation to $142,000, beginning in 2023.
The final vote in the Senate was 33 to 23 in favor, and 81 to 52 in the Assembly, WRGB reports. Every Republican in the Assembly voted against the pay hike.

Democratic New York Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, who represents the 95th Assembly District, has announced her retirement from public office after 30 years of service.
Galef, an 82-year-old resident of Ossining, said that she would retire from her seat at the end of 2022 in an announcement on Thursday, Dec. 15.
First elected to the seat in 1992, Galef represents parts of Northern Westchester, including Peekskill, Cortlandt, Croton-on-Hudson, Ossining, and parts of Yorktown, as well as parts of Putnam County, including Philipstown, Kent, Cold Spring, and Nelsonville.

More than a year after a 15-year-old New York girl was gunned down during a robbery, a man has pleaded guilty in her killing.
Branden Rivera, age 20, of Albany, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree attempted murder in the death of Destiny Greene Thursday, Nov. 17, in Albany County Court.
Greene, a sophomore at Latham’s Shaker High School, was shot at around 9 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021, near Wilbur and Philip streets in Albany, according to police.
She later died from her injuries at Albany Memorial Hospital.

If former President Donald Trump decides to face off with President Joe Biden for an election rematch in 2024, the race could be close in New York, according to new polling.
In a hypothetical matchup between the two, voters were asked who they would support if the presidential election were held today.
Biden, a Democrat, narrowly leads Trump, a Republican, by a margin of five points, 42 to 37 percent, the SurveyUSA poll found.

A New York doctor will avoid prison after admitting that he filed false tax returns.
Albany County resident Ehab Kodsi, age 56, of Watervliet, was sentenced to pay $245,212 in restitution and pay an additional $25,000 fine Thursday, Nov. 3, in federal court in Albany.
The sentence followed Kodsi’s guilty plea to filing a false tax return and admission that he deliberately underreported revenue from both his pain management company in Queensbury, in Warren County, and his real estate company between 2015 and 2018.

Man Charged With Stealing More Than $50K In Cash, Checks From Vehicle In Westchester County
Police have charged a New York City man who was apprehended upstate with stealing more than $50,000 from a vehicle parked at a Northern Westchester County business.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, at around 3:30 p.m., police were called to a business in Yorktown on Saw Mill River Road to investigate a report from a victim that $42,000 in cash and $10,000 in payroll checks had been stolen from their parked vehicle, according to Yorktown Police.
