It was not the type of start the Mercy College mens lacrosse team had envisioned.
The Mavericks, who were ranked nationally in the Division II mens lacrosse poll, lost their first three games. It wouldn't get any easier as Mercy faced Wheeling Jesuit University, which won four of its first five games.
But Mercy would break through as Sal Spinelli, Mike Marzocca and Patrick Hodapp each had hat tricks in a 10-7 East Coast Conference win Sunday in Martins Ferry, Ohio.
The score was even at 6-6 through three quarters before the Mavericks (1-3) erupted four goals. Hodapp capped his hat trick with two goals and Spinelli and Marzocca had one apiece.
