Hastings Girls Tennis Snaps Losing Streak

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y – Victoria Yan and Katerina Barry served up a doubles win to start off Monday’s match with Pleasantville and the Hastings girls’ tennis team won four of its next six matches en route to the Yellow Jackets first team victory in three years.

“It’s my first varsity win ever,” an excited Yan said after she and Barry took their doubles match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. “I can’t believe it. We are learning to play together and after we won the first set we knew we could do it.”

Hastings coach Ken Jernigan nursed his team of seniors and younger players through a long match that was threatened by thunder clouds. The first match of the new 2011 season ended two years of losing and frustration.

“It’s a great win for the girls,” Jernigan said. “Two of our better players weren’t here, but the girls hung in. They all gave a great effort. We haven’t won for a couple of years, so this is great.”

The Yellow Jackets may have predicted this first win after a string of 16 match losses over the last two seasons in their pre-match comments about the program.

“Each of us can play tennis, but we don’t have a lot of experience on the court,” Barry said before her match. “We all get along and have a good time. We think we’re good enough to win some matches."

Chloe Friedman said Hastings has had success in the past and has the talent to be a winner.

“We have fun and we have good skills, but we have to learn to play better in matches,” Friedman, who paired with Dayna Wilmot to win a thrilling second doubles match in a tiebreaker. “This is so great. We finally got to win.” Hastings looks for its next win when it hosts Edgemont Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
