PTSA Raises Money Through Used Book Sale

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – A used book sale may be the perfect remedy for local residents looking to get started on spring cleaning a little early this year.

“You feel like I bought this book, it’s a good book I don’t want to throw it out, but I don’t want it in my house any longer,” said PTSA volunteer Mary McNamara.

The Dobbs Ferry PTSA will be holding a used book sale on Friday Feb. 3 and Saturday Feb. 4 at the high school.  The sale runs from 5p.m.-8p.m. on Friday and 9a.m.-4p.m. on Saturday.

“They were thinking about running a used book sale because they hadn’t done it in a number of years,” McNamara said.  “I’m rather fond of books so I decided to volunteer.”

With prices ranging from .50 cents to $3 dollars, McNamara said the quality of the used items have been even better than expected.

“We’re getting a lot of really excellent quality children’s books, adult books, games,” she said.  “Some of them aren’t even open.  I’m really surprised with the quality level that is being donated, it’s great.”

Lisa Salvetti, who has volunteered with the PTSA for the past five years, said the sale is something all parents can appreciate.

“As a parent when I bring my kids to book sales its fantastic,” she said.  “They can pick four or five books and it’s all under 10 dollars.  Whereas if I went and bought a new book in almost the same condition, it would have been for one or two books for 10 dollars.”

Creating a fundraiser that was cheap and easy for local residents to participate in was a key factor in the used book sale.

“We make sure the prices are very good so it opens up an opportunity for people who might not be willing to spend the money or might not be able to spend the money on the books,” McNamara said.  “It’s an easy way to get some decent books in everyone’s hand.”

With books for every demographic at the sale, McNamara said age is not a factor.

“It’s from probably ages one to 90,” she said. “We have a little bit of everything.”
