DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Beginning this summer Mercy College’s Speech and Hearing Center is offering voice therapy for transgender individuals on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. from July 5 to Aug. 2.

The Transgender Voice and Communication Group will work with graduate students in Communication Disorders, under the supervision of licensed, ASHA-certified Speech Language Pathologists, to explore ways to modify their voice, language and nonverbal communication in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Mercy College Communication Disorders Assistant Professor Dr. Shari Salzhauer Berkowitz said, “There is a lack of services for vocal health for the transgender community in Westchester and Rockland counties. We hope to remedy this by offering a safe space for individuals to explore their vocal skills. Our students will benefit from learning to use clinical instrumentation to measure aspects of voice, such as pitch and loudness. Everyone wins. We hope this summer will be the start of something big.”

The group is open to anyone in the transgender community who wants to modify their voice and speech presentation. The five week class is $50. For more information about the program contact Dr. Berkowitz at Mercy College
