The Wizards faced off against the Irvington All-Star team, but the game was less about the score and more about the experience and money organizers raised for the school district.
“The excitement in the gym was palpable and contagious,” said Tiffany Flynn, a physical education teacher Dows Lane Elementary School who coached the Irvington team. “As they announced each member of the All-Star team, the students roared with cheers.”
Flynn added that students, parents, and staff were all awed by the Wizards’s ability on the court.
“They can do tricks with a basketball I didn’t even know were possible,” she said.
Like their well-known counterparts, the Harlem Globetrotters, the Harlem Wizards showed off their talent while entertaining the audience.
A halftime highlight was playing “You’ve Been Tricked,” which included a pass-and-catch game with students that kept the audience laughing and participants on their toes.
The students also got to chat with all the Wizards, Flynn said.
Though the teachers were trounced, their athletic efforts will help enhance their students’ education, said Sian Brown, a member of the all-volunteer PTSA.
