The event, part of Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-11), will engage students in grades 3-12 in a number of coding exercises.
“Coding and programming are great ways to learn logic and critical thinking,” said district Director of Technology Jesse Lubinsky, who, along with math teacher Diana Cassidy, organized the event. “We will teach our children how computers work in our world and introduce them to technology, building a foundation for their future.”
The district's planned activities vary by grade level.
At Dows Lane Elementary School, Jessie Yu, a guest speaker from IBM, will talk to third graders about her career as a computer programmer before students break out into groups to practice coding.
Main Street School students will practice coding in the computer labs with their classes.
Students at Irvington Middle School will have the opportunity to participate in the national event through their mathematics, technology and study skills classes.
Irvington High School students can sign up to attend the coding sessions on Thursday and on Dec. 15 with Lubinsky and Cassidy.
Lubinsky said some of the exercises will involve a module called “Building a Galaxy with Code," which is based on the film “Star Wars.”
“While the Hour of Code is meant to act as an introduction to coding and programming, we are hoping that this opportunity will ... inspire students and spark an interest in computer science,” Lubinsky said. “Many students have no idea what it means to code and how important it is in so many areas of our society.”
This year marks the third time the district has participated in the Hour of Code. Last year’s event generated an interest to create more opportunities throughout the district for students to code, organizers said.
