IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Children in grades one through five practiced math skills as they competed in live games against same-grade children across the world.

The World Education Games organized the math event that took place Oct. 13-15. Students at Dows Lane Elementary School and Main Street School logged onto their computers on Oct. 14, which is World Maths Day.

Students played 60-second math fact games, they tried to get as many answers correct as possible so they could earn points to support UNICEF’s educational programs.

Dows Lane Principal Deborah Mariniello said students had been practicing their math facts to prepare for World Maths Day. "This is a truly unique world event and a fantastic way to promote numeracy within our school,” Mariniello said. “Past results of this event have shown that students make significant improvements in their mental arithmetic skills and have fun in the process."

Fifth-grader Janet Mendoza said “It’s really cool that you get to play with kids around the world and see what math facts they know.” She was matched up with students in the United States, India and the Bahamas.

Fifth-grader Michael Sollecito, who remembers playing in the World Maths Day games when he was in second grade in 2013, said he looked forward to playing “My favorite subject is math and I get to practice it while having fun,” he said. “I love it. There’s so much variety in playing the game and I never want to stop. It’s awesome how you get to interact with people around the world.”
