The team members, senior Connor Winton, juniors Max Kerner and Jordan Schwed and freshman Rishikesh Madabhushi, qualified for the national history quiz competition after a strong performance at the Lower Hudson History Bee and Bowl Tournament, which was held in December at White Plains High School.
In addition to competing as a team member at the National History Bowl competition, Schwed will also compete individually at the National History Bee competition.
At the national competition, they will compete against students from across the country and answer a series of buzzer-based history questions in a number of rounds.
According to the National History Bee and Bowl rules, questions can be about history of arts, sciences, religion, philosophy, language, historical geography, recent history, sports and entertainment, as well as reference political, diplomatic, social and military history.
Academic Challenge club adviser Alison Zerbo said Madabhushi is particularly strong in geography, while Kerner is strong in ancient Greek and Roman history, and Winton and Schwed are both strong in European history. They’ve been preparing for the competition over the last month with two practices a week after school.
“We’ve been practicing with the questions from last year's national tournament,” Zerbo said. “In addition, the students have picked certain subjects that they are each focused on and studying on their own.”
