Hastings High School and Valhalla High School are at the top of the class.

The two high schools were one of 342 schools recognized nationwide Thursday as Blue Ribbon schools from the U.S. Department of Education.

“The National Blue Ribbon School Award is a strong statement about all of the great work that happens every day in Valhalla," Valhalla High School principal Jon Thomas said. "The students, staff, and administrators at every level know that their work is important and valued, and now the rest of the country knows that as well. It is a true honor to be recognized for always doing what is best for our students.”

Hastings High School Principal Louis Adipietro said he was proud of the entire school community.

"This award further validates the incredible work of our teachers, staff and students," Adipietro said. "The culture that we have created at Hastings High School is inclusive and encourages individual expression. It is an honor to serve as principal of Hastings High School."

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap.

"National Blue Ribbon Schools are active demonstrations of preparing every child for a bright future," said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. "You are visionaries, innovators, and leaders. You have much to teach us: some of you personalize student learning, others engage parents and communities in the work and life of your local schools and still others develop strong and forward-thinking leaders from among your teaching staff."

Now in its 35th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized more than 8,500 schools.
