Hastings Drops Homecoming 15-6 to Albertus Magnus

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Despite a fourth quarter comeback attempt, the Hastings football team fell to Albertus Magnus, 15-6, on Saturday afternoon.

Homecoming is about more than just the football game though as it drew locals of all ages, students and alumni who all crowded around Reynolds field for the afternoon. “I just I really want to see this snowball and take off,” said Hastings Booster Club president Bob Wilt.  “It’s good the parents come out, it’s fantastic.”

Before the festivities got started there was a rose ceremony to honor all the senior athletes before the game.  Seniors presented roses to their parents before kickoff. “It’s a little thing, but it’s well received,” Wilt said.

The Hastings Alumni Association was also on hand selling CD’s from the Yellow Jacket Jam, while also looking for new members to help grow future alumni events. “It’s going very well, this is homecoming, the alumni are here,” said Rafael Zaratzian of the Hastings Alumni Association.

Regardless of the football team’s loss, many residents said homecoming goes beyond the game and said its more about the community as a whole. “We believe in Hastings,” said Patty Speranza as she sported a Hastings jersey in support on the village.

The game itself was a tight one with the score knotted at zero at the half, but that would soon change as each team finally got on the board.  Albertus Magnus took the 8-0 lead after a touchdown and a two point conversion early in the fourth quarter.  Hastings took the ensuing kickoff back to midfield though and scored on the next play on a long run to the left.  The Yellow Jackets could not convert the two point attempt though and trailed 8-6 with less than nine minutes to go.

Hastings made a defensive stop and the team was driving for a comeback win, but the Yellow Jackets were intercepted in the red zone to halt the momentum.  The Falcons took advantage and ran the ball down to the Hastings goal line before pounding it in to ice the game.  They also made the extra point field goal to walk away with the 15-6 victory.
