Malpass is the first Dobbs Ferry student in district's seven-year-old Science Research Program to win the top prize at the competition. He will be one of 10 finalists among all competing for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Ariz. in May.
The prize includes an all-expenses paid trip to ISEF for both Malpass and his science research teacher Tom Callahan.
“Ryan has a keen intellect, good people skills and a real aptitude for what he is doing,” Callahan said. “He is also very receptive to constructive criticism and uses that wisely to make improvements on his research and presentation. Going to ISEF is a huge honor and a first for our science research program.”
Malpass and five fellow Dobbs Ferry science research students presented their projects at the 13th annual Regeneron WESEF competition in March. They were competing against approximately 350 students from 33 area high schools in Westchester and Putnam counties.
The ISEF provides an annual forum for more than 1,500 high school students from more than 70 countries, regions and territories to showcase their independent research. Students will be competing for more $3 million in awards and prizes.
Malpass, who will attend Yale University in the fall, is an IB Diploma Candidate and member of the National Honor Society as well as Secretary General of the Model United Nations, a member of the Legislative Branch and the District Technology Committee.
The following Dobbs Ferry students were tops in their categories at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair:
Rebecca Wiersma, third place in Cell Biology, Ankeeta Shah, second place in Materials Science, and Chloe Wang, second place in Chemistry
